The name “Maroochydore” has a few possible origins: all derived from local Indigenous Australian languages, and relating to the area’s population of black swans. The mouth of the Maroochy River is “where the black swan lives”—which “marutchi dora” translates to. Others say the name comes from the Yuggera people of Brisbane, whose word “mutchi-kutchi” means “red-bill”. Maroochydore today is your typical seaside destination where modern living meets unraveling ocean views, as far as the eye can see.

Maroochydore sits around the estuary of the Maroochy River, marking the geographical heart of the Sunshine Coast. It is accessible via the Bruce Highway and just a short drive (or beach walk) away from the nearby suburbs of Caloundra and Mooloolaba. The Brisbane CBD is an hour’s drive south.

• Maroochydore Beach is a patrolled beach perfect for swimming, bodyboarding, and surfing—with many surf sport carnivals taking place on its shores. And if you take a stroll along the pristine coastline, you’ll wind up in Mooloolaba.
• The Maroochy River flows out to the ocean, and links up with the mountains. Hire a fishing tinny or join a sunset cruise, and let the current take you down a stunning route of natural scenery. You can also kayak, canoe or swim here, or if you’re feeling daring, have a go at wind sailing or stand up paddle boarding.
• Cotton Tree is located near the mouth of the river, with Cotton Tree Beach nearby. This is a great spot for a family picnic or BBQ, with plenty of play areas and shaded canopies to explore. Cotton Tree Esplanade also has a number of cafes and shops. The town is named after the trees native to the area.
• Chambers Island in the waters of the Maroochy River; it’s a great place to escape the busy beaches and is accessible either by boat or footbridge. Chambers Island is one of the Sunshine Coast’s best kept secrets.
• Alexandra Headland is south of Maroochydore, and is best accessed with a relaxed coastal walk. This surf beach is characterised by its narrow rock formations which jut out into the ocean, providing a serene view as you tuck into your meal at the Alexandra Headland Surf Club. Across the water, you can spot the iconic Point Cartwright Lighthouse.
• The Maroochy Botanic Gardens will give you a day of bushwalks, peaceful canopies and lush greenery.

Indulge in retail therapy

Maroochydore houses the biggest shopping centre on the Sunshine Coast—the Sunshine Plaza. With 220 specialty stores and a cinema, you’ll find a range of leading fashion stores, bookshops, gifts and department stores. For more relaxed shopping in the region, there are plenty of boutique stores on Duporth Avenue and the Cotton Tree Markets for a selection of locally made art, clothing, homewares, food and gifts.

Cafe by day, cocktail by night

From Moroccan to tapas, Japanese to Thai and fish and chips or a steak, Maroochydore has any cuisine you could want. Ocean Street is known for its multicultural blend of foods and is home to a number of dining institutions with some venues even showcasing local live music.
